Since then, we’ve refined and perfected our All-Wheel Control system, building vehicles that have conquered the rigors of off-road rally and endurance racing. These advanced technologies have been transitioned into every All-Wheel Control-equipped Mitsubishi Motors vehicle, providing you with the stability and traction you need to tackle any driving scenario, including our slippery Canadian winter roads.
Mitsubishi Motors’ patented All-Wheel Control system leverages a suite of innovative technologies that delivers confidence and a superior driving experience by improving handling, safety and performance across a variety of driving and road conditions – wet, slick or dry.
Mitsubishi Motors’ All-Wheel Control system puts YOU in control, with the ability to choose how engaged the system is. There are three settings available at the touch of a button, optimizing your preference between fuel economy and 4-Wheel Drive capability without compromising safety.
2-Wheel Drive:
Keeps the vehicle in Front-Wheel Drive regardless of driving conditions, for economical driving on normal dry roads and freeways.
4-Wheel Drive Auto:
Offers a well-balanced 4-Wheel Drive performance, resulting in enhanced fuel efficiency, traction, high-speed stability and predictable handling based on road and driving conditions.
4-Wheel Drive Lock:
Increased torque is applied to the rear wheels, helping the vehicle enhance performance on slippery surfaces, such as on snow-covered roads or sand.
ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED COUPLING
When wheel slippage is detected, the system directs torque between the front and rear axles as required, to enhance overall traction on slick surfaces. This is especially useful when accelerating from a stop on slippery surfaces, or climbing a hill covered in ice or snow.
ACTIVE STABILITY CONTROL
When the system detects a difference between the intended and actual direction of the vehicle, it automatically reduces engine power and applies brakes independently on the wheels with less traction. This reduces the chance of understeer or oversteer in tough cornering situations, enhancing safety and helping your vehicle stay on its path.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKES
Combined with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, the system prevents the wheels from locking up under heavy braking, or while braking on slippery road surfaces. This allows the wheels to continue turning while stopping in an emergency, keeping you in control at all times.
Drive as you intended
Whether you’re seeking adventure or predictability, Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) puts you in total control of your driving.
If you’re the cautious type, you’ll feel confident about braking on icy roads and steering around potholes. If you want fun, you’ll love hugging curves and powering through mud. And for comfort, you’ll rest easy on long highway drives, steady through every turn and any unexpected gusts of wind.
It might sound simple, but our vehicles do the three most important things perfectly, on any road: they go forward, turn and brake, exactly as you intended.
Super All-Wheel Control also features driver selectable modes at the touch of a button, to optimize capability depending on the driving situation.
What is Super All-Wheel Control?
It’s All-Wheel Drive, but smarter
Using real-time data from sensors, Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) integrates all the information and sends instructions to each wheel, all the time. In other words, it multitasks to deliver the perfect drive.
So you get:
AUTO:
offers a well-balanced 4-Wheel Drive performance, resulting in enhanced fuel efficiency, traction, high-speed stability and predictable handling based on road and driving conditions.
SNOW:
provides improved traction and stability specifically for snow-covered or slippery roads.
GRAVEL:
provides maximum traction on coarser roads or whenever you might find yourself stuck in a rough patch of off-road terrain.
The Outlander PHEV is the only Plug-in Hybrid Electric SUV in Canada that offers all-electric 4-Wheel Drive, meaning you don’t have to compromise fuel efficiency while driving in EV Mode with 4-Wheel Drive capability! The twin electric motors manage the front-to-rear distribution of near-instantaneous torque to deliver the traction to the wheels that need it most, when they need it.
NORMAL:
Offers well-balanced all-wheel drive dynamics, resulting in enhanced fuel efficiency, traction, high-speed stability and predictable handling across a variety of road conditions and driving styles.
Power:
Maximizes acceleration performance to enhance responsiveness during situations where more torque is required, such as passing on the highway.
ECO:
ECO mode improves the efficiency of the gasoline engine and S-AWC to support fuel-efficient driving.
Tarmac:
TARMAC mode provides enhanced agility and heightened performance when travelling on dry, paved roads.
Gravel:
GRAVEL mode delivers maximum traction on coarser roads or whenever you might find yourself stuck in a rough patch of off-road terrain.
Snow:
SNOW mode provides improved traction and stability specifically for light to medium snow-covered or slippery roads.
Mud:
MUD mode enhances performance when driving through muddy or deep snow, especially when accelerating and/or turning from a stopped position.
ECO:
ECO mode improves the efficiency of the gasoline engine and S-AWC to support fuel-efficient driving. The system automatically transfers torque to the rear wheels when loss of traction is detected, to enhance stability beyond the typical 2-Wheel Drive fuel-efficient drive mode.

ACTIVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL
The Active Front Differential limits the differential speed between the right and left front wheels with an electronically controlled clutch when oversteer or understeer is detected, helping you hug the corners as you originally planned.
ACTIVE YAW CONTROL
This highly advanced system uses real-time data from the steering wheel angle, yaw rate, driving torque, braking pressure and wheel speed to detect excessive rotational force on any given wheel. It applies ABS systems as required to the four wheels to quickly manage wheel speed and maximize traction, providing an enhanced, sporty feel in tight corners, and improved safety when braking or accelerating in slippery or snow-covered turns.
